How many sons does God have?
The unique title 'only begotten Son' appears beside many applications of divine sonship, but those applications describe several different kinds of relationship.
- Textual conflict
- Weak tension
- The alleged conflict needs substantial assumptions, such as treating an omission as a denial or figurative language as literal.
- Importance
- Foundational
- A central claim about origins, salvation, divine justice, or religious authority.
Collective and adopted sonship differ from only begotten sonship, and the sharper royal begetting passage never identifies a distinct competing son.
An editorial assessment of the quoted passages. Importance describes the stakes; it does not increase certainty. Reading order weighs both.
Jesus is described as God's only begotten Son
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
