Who wrote the Pentateuch?
The texts attribute law writing to Moses but contain narration from after his death, which challenges authorship of the entire final work by Moses alone.
- Textual conflict
- Weak tension
- The alleged conflict needs substantial assumptions, such as treating an omission as a denial or figurative language as literal.
- Importance
- Major
- A major event or claim with wider implications.
Posthumous narration challenges sole Mosaic authorship, but the cited attribution only says Moses wrote a law rather than every final sentence.
An editorial assessment of the quoted passages. Importance describes the stakes; it does not increase certainty. Reading order weighs both.
Moses writes a law and delivers speeches to Israel
And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi, which bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and unto all the elders of Israel.
These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
