Will the Messiah be a descendant of David?
The prophetic lineage points toward David's family, while Jesus questions the scribes' description of Christ as David's son.
- Textual conflict
- Weak tension
- The alleged conflict needs substantial assumptions, such as treating an omission as a denial or figurative language as literal.
- Importance
- Foundational
- A central claim about origins, salvation, divine justice, or religious authority.
Jesus questions how David's Lord is his son without explicitly denying descent, and status does not logically exclude ancestry.
An editorial assessment of the quoted passages. Importance describes the stakes; it does not increase certainty. Reading order weighs both.
A righteous ruler will arise from Jesse and David
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
