How many male Levites more than one month old did Moses and Aaron count?

The stated total is three hundred lower than the sum of the three supplied Levite family counts.

Textual conflict: Direct contradiction; The quoted passages make incompatible claims about the same subject under the same conditions. Little additional inference is needed.
Importance: Minor; A local detail in a story, chronology, or inventory.

The three named Levite branches share the age threshold and total 22,300 against the declared overall count of 22,000.

An editorial assessment of the quoted passages. Importance describes the stakes; it does not increase certainty. Reading order weighs both.

Understanding the contradiction

Numbers 3:39 gives twenty two thousand males aged one month and upward across the Levite families. Numbers 3:21-22 gives Gershon seven thousand five hundred, Numbers 3:27-28 gives Kohath eight thousand six hundred, and Numbers 3:33-34 gives Merari six thousand two hundred. All three use the same age threshold.

Adding 7,500, 8,600, and 6,200 produces 22,300, not 22,000. Numbers 3:17 identifies these as Levi's three branches, so the subtotal comparison has an explicit basis. The excerpts do not identify three hundred excluded people or a different counting rule for the final total. The discrepancy is straightforward arithmetic within the stated census population.
