When did Jacob rename Luz to Bethel?
Genesis recounts a naming of Bethel before Jacob's journey and another after his return, while the later account already recognizes the earlier name.
- Textual conflict
- Weak contradiction
- The supplied passages do not establish incompatible claims. Different events, meanings, or conditions may account for the difference.
- Importance
- Minor
- A local detail in a story, chronology, or inventory.
The later naming already identifies the place as Bethel and describes another appearance, allowing a renewed commemoration rather than two incompatible first namings.
An editorial assessment of the quoted passages. Importance describes the stakes; it does not increase certainty. Reading order weighs both.
Jacob names Luz Bethel before continuing east
And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it. And he called the name of that place Beth–el: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.
Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.
