Is it OK to drink alcohol?
The collection praises wine while warning against it, with many restrictions tied to particular roles, excess, or harm rather than a universal ban on alcohol.
Textual conflict
Weak tension
The alleged conflict needs substantial assumptions, such as treating an omission as a denial or figurative language as literal.
Importance
Supporting
A supporting event, teaching, or biographical claim.
Broad warnings against wine sit beside enjoyment, but role restrictions, drunken excess, poetic language, and ordinary drinking mostly concern different conditions.
An editorial assessment of the quoted passages. Importance describes the stakes; it does not increase certainty. Reading order weighs both.
Nazirite vows require abstention from wine and grape products
And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the Lord: He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried.

Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
Lingering over wine brings sorrow injury and conflict
Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
Attractive wine is compared with a poisonous snake
Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!
Luxurious wine drinkers ignore their people's suffering
Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came! Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines: be they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border? Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near; That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall; That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David; That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:
Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Harvesters will drink their wine in God's holy courts
The Lord hath sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and the sons of the stranger shall not drink thy wine, for the which thou hast laboured: But they that have gathered it shall eat it, and praise the Lord; and they that have brought it together shall drink it in the courts of my holiness.
And thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the Lord thy God always.

And rent the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it thee: and yet thou hast not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in mine eyes;
Daily lamb offerings include a measured wine offering
Now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the altar; two lambs of the first year day by day continually. The one lamb thou shalt offer in the morning; and the other lamb thou shalt offer at even: And with the one lamb a tenth deal of flour mingled with the fourth part of an hin of beaten oil; and the fourth part of an hin of wine for a drink offering.
Strong drink is offered to the dying and distressed
Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more. Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
The song invites friends and beloved people to drink abundantly

And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
The writer favors alternating wine and water as a literary analogy
For as it is hurtful to drink always wine, or always water, but pleasant to use sometimes the one, and sometimes the other: so if the speech be always nicely framed, it will not be grateful to the readers. But here it shall be ended.
Numbers 6:1-3 restricts people under a Nazirite vow, Leviticus 10:9 restricts priests entering the tabernacle, and Judges 13:3-4 addresses a particular expectant mother. Jeremiah 35:14 praises obedience to a family's abstinence rule; Daniel's refusal and Luke's promised abstainer are individual cases. None of these rules automatically applies to everyone in every setting. Warnings about drunken priests, poverty, violence, and shame likewise concern consequences or excess, though Proverbs 23:31-32 speaks more broadly by warning against even looking at attractive wine.
The positive passages include wine as blessing, hospitality, celebration, and relief. Deuteronomy 14:26 explicitly permits purchasing wine or strong drink for rejoicing before God. Ecclesiastes 9:7 encourages drinking with a merry heart, while John 2:3-10 portrays Jesus supplying wine at a wedding. The measured drink offerings concern ritual use rather than human consumption. The praise of David in 1 Kings 14:8 says nothing about wine by itself; the distribution appears separately in 1 Chronicles 16:3.
Ephesians 5:18 prohibits drunkenness, not every drink, and 1 Timothy 5:23 recommends a little wine for a named need. Romans 14:21 recommends abstention when drinking harms another person. Habakkuk 2:16 and Lamentations 4:21 are humiliating judgment images, not friendly drinking advice. The comparison therefore does not support a single universal prohibition contradicted by every positive mention. It reveals varied and sometimes sharply opposed evaluations, especially between broad warnings about wine's danger and explicit encouragement to enjoy it. The actor, amount, purpose, and occasion determine which claims actually overlap.
